LG Electronics recently concluded the 2024 Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disabilities in Manila, Philippines. This annual event, held from November 3 to 8, brought together 104 talented individuals from 16 countries.
These individuals came to compete in innovative IT challenges to foster inclusivity and enhance accessibility in the tech world.
Since its launch in 2011, GITC has been a platform for young people with disabilities. It provides a space to showcase their abilities, sharpen their IT skills, and gain confidence in their talents.
The competition is more than just an event; it’s an opportunity for young people to open doors to careers in technology.
This year’s competition was packed with diverse tasks that tested participants’ abilities in various areas. One challenge, eTool, focused on creating presentation slides and managing spreadsheets.
Another eLifeMap tested participants’ skills in online search and image retrieval.
The eContent challenge assessed participants’ abilities in video editing and production. The eCreative challenge pushed contestants to code a self-driving car program and develop ideas to improve the lives of people with disabilities.
This challenge aimed to highlight the role of technology in making the world more inclusive.
A new feature of this year’s event was the “Generative AI” challenge. Participants had to showcase their skills with AI tools, which have become crucial in today’s tech landscape. This unique addition allowed competitors to display their creativity and adaptability.
Zulzahirah Binti Mohd Anwar from Malaysia was crowned the 2024 GITC winner. She excelled across multiple categories, impressing judges with her skill and innovation.
Zulzahirah shared that competing alongside peers with similar goals was a meaningful experience. She also built lasting friendships with fellow participants, reinforcing the sense of global unity.
The competition has grown since its inception. Over the years, it has involved more than 5,000 participants from over 40 countries. Many GITC alums have gone on to build successful careers in IT and related fields, breaking barriers in the industry.
One notable example is “Aikeo Koomanivong,” who competed in 2014. Aikeo, a visually impaired participant, now leads a disability service center in Laos. He has pioneered accessible technology, including free braille software, to support those with visual impairments.
GITC continues to help young people build technical skills while boosting their confidence. It prepares participants for careers in IT and provides them with global connections. LG’s role in these achievements is a testament to their ongoing commitment to inclusivity.
The occasion also aligns with LG’s larger goal of enhancing the lives of people with disabilities. Through their “Better Life for All” vision, LG has introduced initiatives such as the “LG Comfort Kit,” braille stickers for products, and sign language customer service centers.
These efforts guarantee that individuals with disabilities can conveniently access LG products and services.
This year’s competition also highlighted the growing need for accessible technologies. The company believes everyone should be able to thrive in today’s technology-driven world.
LG Electronics is also dedicated to supporting young people with disabilities as they pursue their IT dreams. The company recognizes that these individuals have unique perspectives that can enrich the technology industry.
By hosting events like GITC, LG helps foster a future where diversity is at the forefront of innovation.
“We remain committed to supporting individuals with disabilities as they refine their skills and build self-confidence,” said “Yoon Dae-sik,” senior vice president of External Relations at LG Electronics. “Our goal is to help them realize their dreams and contribute to the IT field.”
Looking ahead, LG plans to continue promoting diversity and inclusivity. GITC will remain a vital part of this strategy, helping to create more pathways for young people with disabilities to succeed.
LG hopes to inspire other organizations to foster a more inclusive and accessible world for everyone.
In conclusion, the 2024 Global IT Challenge is more than just a competition. It’s a celebration of talent, resilience, and innovation. It shows that with the right opportunities and support, young people with disabilities can excel in any field.
As the tech world continues to evolve, it’s clear that the future is bright for those who are given the chance to shine. Through initiatives like GITC, LG Electronics remains committed to empowering every individual and ensuring a more inclusive future for all.
