Samsung Sparks Dialogue on AI and Wireless Convergence

Samsung Explores AI's Impact on Future Wireless Technologies at Silicon Valley Summit

Samsung Electronics recently hosted the Silicon Valley Future Wireless Summit in Mountain View, California. The event centered on “Future Wireless for the AI Era” and gathered industry leaders, academics, and government representatives.

They came together to discuss how artificial intelligence (AI) and wireless communication technologies can converge, especially as the world moves from 5G to 6G networks.

Approximately 80 distinguished participants attended the summit. These included representatives from major telecommunications operators, manufacturers, government agencies, and academic institutions from various countries.

“Starting with this summit, we will help industry and academic leaders to work together to continue the much-needed research already being carried out on the convergence of AI and wireless communication technologies, making the user experience even better,” said Angelo Jeongho Park, Vice President of Samsung Research’s Advanced Communications Research Center at Samsung Electronics.

The summit began with a keynote presentation titled “Shaping the Future of Next-Generation Mobile Communication.” The event had three main sessions.

The first session, “AI-Native Communication,” delved into the potential benefits of applying AI across all areas of telecommunications. Participants explored emerging services and addressed vital challenges that needed resolution to integrate AI into communication systems fully.

The second session, “Sustainability: Energy Saving & Efficiency,” focused on critical technologies and necessary research for creating sustainable 6G communication systems. Emphasis was placed on energy savings and efficiency improvements to meet future demands.

Sustainability has become a significant trend in technology development, and this session highlighted its importance.

In the third session, “Innovations to Drive Future Wireless,” panelists discussed the innovations required in 6G network architecture. They explored how to provide services and user experiences that surpass those offered by 5G.

The conversation highlighted the need for a more differentiated and enhanced user experience in the next generation of wireless technology.

Each session included panel discussions, allowing for dynamic exchanges between participants. Through Q&A sessions and active debates, they provided a complete understanding of the challenges and opportunities in integrating AI with wireless communications.

The summit concluded with a technical demonstration of AI Radio Access Network (RAN) technology jointly developed by Samsung Electronics and its partners. This cutting-edge technology applies AI to RAN to enhance base station quality.

The demonstration showcased how AI can significantly improve network performance and user experience by optimizing key performance factors such as spectral and energy efficiency.

Samsung’s commitment to advancing AI-native communication technologies was evident throughout the event. The company highlighted its ongoing efforts to expand the global influence of next-generation communication technologies utilizing AI.

Samsung Electronics continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of wireless communications. The company’s active participation in various industry groups and alliances underscores its dedication to innovation and collaboration.

In February, Samsung became a founding member of the AI-RAN Alliance. Currently holding board membership and vice-chairing the AI on RAN working group, the alliance focuses on accelerating the adoption of AI in radio access networks.

In July, Samsung secured the chairpersonship of the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU) 6G standardization group in the radio communication sector. This position allows Samsung to influence global standards and contribute to developing 6G technologies.

Additionally, Samsung has been reappointed as vice chair of the board of directors at the Next G Alliance (NGA), strengthening its leadership in AI-native communications technology. The NGA aims to advance North American mobile technology leadership in 6G and beyond.

In August, Samsung signed a memorandum of understanding with Japanese mobile carrier NTT DOCOMO for joint research on the application of AI in next-generation communications. This partnership explores new possibilities and accelerates innovation in AI-driven wireless technologies.

As preparations for 6G communications intensify, the integration of AI into wireless communication systems is becoming increasingly significant. The industry anticipates that AI will be crucial in optimizing network performance, enhancing user experiences, and achieving energy efficiency.

The Silicon Valley Future Wireless Summit was an essential platform for stakeholders to share visions, exchange ideas, and collaborate on research and development efforts.

“By bringing together industry and academic leaders, we are taking significant steps toward realizing the full potential of AI in wireless communications,” said Angelo Jeongho Park. “Our collaborative efforts will pave the way for more advanced, efficient, and user-centric communication systems in the future.”
